Jungle Encounters

Into the Green Unknown

The jungle doesn’t ease you in gently. The moment you step off the trail and into the canopy, everything changes — the air thickens, the sounds multiply, and you realize you’re not visiting nature. You’re inside it. Every trip I’ve taken into dense rainforest has rewired something in my brain. Here are the encounters I’ll never shake.

Borneo: The Orangutan Connection

Watching a wild orangutan build a nest 30 metres above you is humbling in a way nothing else compares to. In Borneo’s Danum Valley, I sat in complete silence for an hour as a mother and baby moved through the trees with an elegance that made my hiking boots feel ridiculous. These are our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, and seeing them in their home — not behind glass — is a privilege that comes with responsibility.

Costa Rica: Night Walks That Change You

If you think the jungle is impressive during the day, wait until nightfall. On a guided night walk in Monteverde Cloud Forest, I saw red-eyed tree frogs glowing against dark leaves, a sleeping toucan tucked into a hollow, and a tarantula the size of my hand casually crossing the path like it owned the place (it did). The jungle at night isn’t scary — it’s electric.
